Veterinary Care at Your Home

What is Pet Blood Work?

Pet blood work is when we take a small blood sample from your pet and test it for things like infections, diseases, organ function, metabolic issues, and normal values for comparison. Blood tests give us important information about your pet's health and help us find problems early.

What to Expect During Pet Blood Work

A quick, easy blood draw will be done by a skilled vet tech or nurse. Small amounts are taken from a vein, usually the arm for dogs/cats or the leg for birds/reptiles. The samples are labeled and sent to our on-site lab for analysis. We usually get the results within 24 hours. The vet will go over the results with you during a follow-up chat to talk about any issues found and suggested treatments or next steps.

How Pet Blood Work Benefits Your Animal

Complete blood testing helps us find medical conditions before your pet shows any signs. Treating issues early leads to better results. Common things we find include anemia, diabetes, liver or kidney disease, cancers, thyroid problems, blood clotting problems, infections, and more based on the tests we run.

Having normal values helps us compare with future health changes. Blood work helps diagnose, treat, and monitor with the best care for your pet. Find out what's going on inside your pet with the power of vet lab medicine. Contact us at Vets ASAP to learn more about pet blood testing services.

Frequently Asked Questions

A complete blood count tests for levels of key red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, hemoglobin, and other cell parts. A chemistry panel checks important organ function markers related to the kidneys, liver, pancreas, electrolyte levels, proteins, glucose, calcium, magnesium, and more. Together, these tell us about oxygen-carrying ability, infection status, clotting factors, diabetes risk, organ health, and baseline wellness.

Yes, we suggest fasting your pet for 8-12 hours before blood collection when possible to make sure we get accurate baseline glucose values and improve some other chemistry tests unless low blood sugar is a possible concern. Water can be given during this pre-test fasting time. Let us know if there are any issues preventing fasting.

Please let our team know ahead of time if your pet is usually scared, nervous, or stressed during vet visits or with things like blood collection so that we can take extra steps and use approved calming stuff, anxiety-reducing sprays, positive rewards, fear-free handling techniques, or sedation if needed to make sure your pet stays as comfortable, stress-free, and happy as possible throughout the process!

The regular office visit or exam fee depends on the location. Please feel free to ask us for an estimate on suggested panels and pricing details ahead of time to best plan for your pet's lab testing needs.
